Accessibility at BreathBeats

Calm should be available to everyone. BreathBeats (the app and breathbeats.app) aims for WCAG 2.2 Level AA and is currently partially conformant: most content meets the standard, and the gaps we know about are listed below. Accessibility is a standing requirement in how we build — not a retrofit.

What we've built for accessibility

  • A full no-camera experience. Every core feature works without camera mode — the music leads on any phone, with nothing to point or position. Camera mode is optional, always.
  • Nothing to read mid-session. Sessions are designed to be followed by sound and simple visuals; you can close your eyes and the experience still works.
  • Motion sensitivity respected. The app and site honor your device's Reduce Motion setting — breathing animations and the orb calm down or step aside when you ask them to.
  • Contrast and legibility. Text and interactive elements are designed to meet WCAG AA contrast on our dark and light surfaces, with visible keyboard focus indicators on the site.
  • Screen readers. We label interactive controls for VoiceOver (iOS) and TalkBack (Android), and decorative graphics are hidden from assistive tech; newer screens are still being brought fully up to this standard (see below).
  • No flashing content. Nothing in the experience flashes more than three times per second.
  • Simple, consistent navigation with a skip-to-content link on the site.

Known limitations (we're honest about these)

BreathBeats is improving quickly. Current limitations we're working on: full screen-reader labeling of newer screens; haptic guidance as an alternative to visual pacing; and expanded caption/audio-description coverage for tutorial content. If something blocks you, we want to know — it moves to the top of the list.

Feedback and support

Email [email protected] with the device, OS, and assistive technology you're using and what happened. We aim to respond within 5 business days, and accessibility-blocking bugs are treated as priority fixes.

Compatibility

Designed for current iOS and Android versions with VoiceOver/TalkBack, system text-size settings, and Reduce Motion; the site targets current versions of Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox with keyboard navigation.

Ongoing commitment

We review accessibility at every release, test with assistive technologies, and treat WCAG 2.1 AA as the floor, not the ceiling. This statement is reviewed at least annually.
